Dear Diary,
Welcoming the New Year and all of it’s possibilities.
2011 offered me growth, adventure, and above all finding my passion. Hairdressing is so much more than just a quick cut or color, and I challenge anyone to try and prove otherwise. Like hundreds of my peers, I am not JUST a Hairdresser. I am creative, visionary, smart, talented, and passionate. I love what I do. I will never have that feeling of hating the job I’ve been dealt ever again. Hairdressers connect with people and they do change lives.
My 2011 was mostly spent at Kohler Academy in Scottsdale, AZ. I graduated with so much experience. I was a member of DREAM Team and participated in organizing many event throughout the year, including a beauty bash, new student welcome activities, BCBG Styling events, and editing the Ktv News for my last few months there. I was trained with wonderful product lines and retail knowledge in Bumble and bumble, Joico, CND, Dermalogica, and Bare Minerals. I decided early on in my time at Kohler that I was going to enter every competition to get my name out there. This led me to be a Top Ten Finalist for Shortcuts’ Most Wanted, Final Twenty for Matrix Spread the Love 2012, and a Beacon Student for 2011. These experiences were food for my hairdresser soul. Getting my License was also a highlight of 2011. The boot camp at Kohler definitely prepared me for that! I encourage everyone to cultivate their creativity and go for everything they believe in and not let fear keep them from greatness.
My time in New York as a Spread the Love Finalist was indescribable. I suppose the only word I can think of is magical. The people I met were all so inspiring. The other finalists were all so unique and have so much to offer to this industry. I can NOT wait to see where everyone will be in a year. Even those of us who didn’t win a place in Spread the Love’s 2012 Final Six are bound to do amazing things. I had so much fun at the events and interviewing that I forgot it was an interview. New York is a beautiful city if you just look up.
As a Beacon student, I was taught business by the best of the best. The list of inspiring people is nearly endless. But most inspiring to me was attending NAHA. The North American Hairstyling Awards. I entered last year, but honestly had NO idea what I was doing. I am ready for this years entry. I’m in the process of creating hair pieces and putting together a little photo shoot. All I need now, are the models… Which shouldn’t be a problem… hopefully. Hah! But since I am running on a budget of FREE, I’m looking mostly to my friends for help, so if you know anyone… Send me a message!
It’s January 2012. I have a LOT to do this month. At the top of my list is lock in a job. There are so many wonderful salons in the area and I need to find the right one for me. It needs to be supportive of my dreams and full of education. There’s nothing like learning and perfecting my craft. Everything happens for a reason and I’m right where I need to be. I can’t wait to see where I will go…
